Discover Hindi

Tucked away on Plesser Str. 6, 12435 Berlin, Germany, Hindi is one of those places you stumble upon once and then keep going back to. I first visited on a chilly Friday evening after a long day exploring Treptow, and since then it has become my go-to spot whenever I crave authentic Indian food in Berlin. From the outside, it looks modest, but once you step in, the aroma of cardamom, cumin, and freshly baked naan instantly sets the mood.

The menu is broad without being overwhelming. You’ll find classics like butter chicken, lamb rogan josh, and chana masala, alongside vegetarian and vegan-friendly dishes that reflect the diversity of Indian cuisine. According to the German Nutrition Society, plant-based meals are increasingly popular across Berlin, and restaurants that provide balanced vegetarian options are seeing steady growth. Hindi clearly understands this shift. Their vegetable thali is a great example: neatly arranged bowls of dal, sabzi, basmati rice, raita, and warm naan create a balanced plate in terms of protein, fiber, and flavor. I once brought a vegetarian friend who is usually skeptical about dining out, and she was impressed by both the variety and the depth of spices.

One thing that stands out is the way the kitchen handles spices. Indian cooking relies heavily on layering flavors rather than overwhelming heat. The chefs here toast whole spices before grinding them, a traditional process that releases essential oils and enhances aroma. This method, often highlighted by culinary experts like Madhur Jaffrey, ensures that dishes taste rounded and authentic. When I asked the staff about their preparation, they explained that marinades for tandoori dishes rest overnight, allowing yogurt and spices to tenderize the meat naturally. You can taste that patience in their chicken tikka, which arrives juicy with a slightly smoky char from the clay oven.

Service plays a big role in the overall experience, and here it feels genuinely warm. On my third visit, the waiter remembered that I preferred medium spice instead of extra hot. That kind of attention builds trust. Online reviews echo this sentiment, with many guests praising the friendly staff and consistent quality. While no restaurant is perfect and peak hours can mean a short wait, the team manages the dining room efficiently, keeping things organized without rushing guests.

Location-wise, being in the 12435 area makes it accessible for locals and visitors exploring the eastern part of Berlin. It’s not a tourist trap; instead, it feels like a neighborhood favorite. The interior décor leans toward traditional Indian elements-subtle wall art, warm lighting, and comfortable seating-creating a relaxed environment whether you’re on a casual date or a group dinner.

Food safety and hygiene are often overlooked in casual reviews, but they matter. Germany maintains strict food safety regulations, and establishments are regularly inspected. While specific inspection data isn’t publicly displayed at the table, the cleanliness of the dining area and restrooms reflects adherence to these standards. As someone who has worked briefly in hospitality, I pay attention to these details, and Hindi meets expectations.

If you’re unsure what to order, start with samosas or pakoras as appetizers, then move on to a curry paired with garlic naan. The mango lassi is thick and refreshing, balancing spicier dishes beautifully. Prices are reasonable for Berlin, especially considering portion sizes. Sharing a couple of mains and sides among friends works well, both economically and socially.

Overall, Hindi delivers what many diners are searching for: authentic Indian flavors, attentive service, and a welcoming atmosphere in Berlin. The combination of carefully prepared dishes, balanced seasoning, and consistent hospitality makes it more than just another restaurant on the map.

  • I love this restaurant. Is it the best Indian food? I don’t know; but the staff and the atmosphere make it worth the visit. Cocktails aren’t anything like what they are meant to be but they’re pretty dang good (avoid the Long Island Iced Team - trust me ) we love the butter chicken, tikka, the chicken soup, the naan. Yummm

  • Server was super nice. You get a free chip thing and sauces which I love. Food was good although I’ve had better. I wish there was a bit more chicken in the chicken korma. Street is quiet and they have plenty of outdoor seating. Would definitely go back!

  • Really good food at an amazing price. Good quality Indian curry served in nice surroundings. The menu has lots of options for those wanting meat, fish or vegetables. They sell cocktails, milkshakes and have beer on draught. We had four main courses with rice, naan bread and dessert... And a few beers. And we spent less than 100€. We all left feeling full. There is plenty of parking across the street.

  • First off, my food was delivered ahead of time and the person who delivered it was very friendly. I really enjoyed the garlic soup with chicken, it was absolutely delicious. The chili chicken dish was too sweet for me and the texture of the sauce was a bit strange and slimy. It was fresh but I wish I’d ordered another main dish. Portions aren’t big but the prices are rather low, so it’s ok.
